These shots show veneer being cut by our neighbor and skilled sawyer, Bruce Bonham, out of a Black Walnut Flitch. A flitch is a large slice from a tree, and these crotch grain walnut beauties were sliced into thin layers to be used as veneer on a demilune table. In the shop, the large Shaker kitchen is taking shape. These are three drawers with a purpose: A spice drawer, a utensil drawer, and a silverware drawer with integrated knifeblock. Each drawer is constructed from dovetailed Pennsylvania Maple and we will use undermount soft close slides. Currently in the woodshop, this Walnut bookcase awaits delivery to Manhattan. It was built in four sections with two fixed shelves plus the bottom, and twelve adjustable shelves. The exposed end features flush modern construction and clean, simple trim. The entire piece is constructed of solid Pennsylvania Walnut lumber. In progress, to be delivered next week, we have this beautiful Walnut Murphy Bed. The design of the front is new, and it features a sculpted wood handle. The curved horizontal element flips 90 degrees to become the foot of the bed when it is folded down. Under the bookcase is a roll out nightstand. This wallbed, bookcase, and desk are being delivered in Manhattan this morning. The client wanted a full-size fold down bed and an office that would go with her existing modern Cherry kitchen as well as her more traditional craftsman oak furniture. The custom French Walnut Credenza in the shop was inspired by this piece. Filled with delightful swirling grain, the credenza’s stunning slab lumber was sourced from a single tree cut into flitches by specialists in imported and figured logs.
